From: Rabindranath Tagore

I lose you over and again

I lose you over and again
Only to rediscover your presence
My dearest one, my love!
You awake in me hopes of catching your sight
And then, disappear!

But how would I fail to know
That you are here, eternally,
Only to move into fleeting disappearance?

As my tremored soul
Searches for you in hope
Waves rise in the sea of my love.

Is it because you are unending and true
That you give yourself up
So easily as nothingness?
That flicker of gentle smile
On your lips
Mingles with the tears in my heart.

In the cycle of tears and laughter

In the cycle of tears and laughter
winter and spring-
I shall bear my offering of songs
through my life.

Is it in your pleasure
that I wear this garland
-- so fragrant with melodies?

Is it why I am sleepless ?
And why oceanic tides
break open all gates?

Is it why crazy winds
blow in waves
through the forest of my ceaseless pains?

And all my lights and shadows tremble
in that current?

I have prepared no nest for the night-fall
I falter in my tasks of the day;
But there is no repose in my taskless service

Where could I find Peace in this Universe?
It is the Peacelessness that strikes the chords
And rings them in tune.
And thus my soul and spirit
Burn to enkindle songs.

Is it in your pleasure
that I wear this garland
--so fragrant with melodies?

Let your eyes touch upon my heart

Stand before me;
Let your eyes touch upon my heart.

In the skies and in this world
in these unsurpassable lights
where my eyes and my spirit
seek your presence in every instance,
stand before me.

Stand in the green armour
of the dusted soil,
stand to touch the ardent earth
and add to her splendours.

Surpassing all whatever exists,
overflowing the cup of my life ,
and surmounting the universe---
Stand before my eyes.

This pain-enkindled soul of mine
stays awake for you in hope
like a solitary star.

Awake my Truth!

Awake my Truth!
Awake like an ever-relentless warrior
In strains of courageous striving...
Weary am I
Of this dark screen that surrounds me !
Tear it apart with unwavering fervor
And throw open all gates !

Eternal monk that is in you,
Will you not ask me for the alms of a consummate offering?
To bequeath my pride and possessions
And my wealth,
My body and soul
And my life
In your very service !

The pulse of the moment

This is the pulse of the moment,
And it declares,
Have no fear, for you shall overcome,
And all gates shall open
To the light of the dawn!

How deeply I am sure
That you shall be free
From every bond!

Time and again
You lose yourself in despair
But you must return
To regain your rights
To the world.

The earth and the waters beckon to you
The people and the stars beckon to you
You are here to sing
Through their tears and their laughters
Through their perils and their defeats.

The flowers and the trees
The rivers and the fountains
Shall all play in harmony with your songs
And your music shall beat and dance
In the rythm of darkness and light.

 My golden Bengal

I love you dearly,
My golden Bengal -
It is your skies and your air that
Forever fill my heart
With the resonance of a flute.

The wondrous smells of the mango orchards
Thrill me in Spring
And in the harvest,
I see lush paddy fields
Sway like gentle smiles..

I have witnessed such beauty,depth
And such tenderness
In you,
In the shades that you gently spread
Across the river banks
And beneath the mighty trees..

And when you speak,
Your words enchant
My being,
And when you cry inwardly,
I can not withold my tears..
